چکیده
The transport of chemically reactive fluids through fractured clay-rich rocks is fundamental to many subsurface engineering technologies. Here, we present results direct-shear laboratory experiments with simultaneous imaging by X-ray Computed Tomography in Opalinus claystone subsequent fluid injection unravel the interplay between mechanical fracture deformation, sorption, and flow. Under constant radial stress (σc = 1.5 MPa), average aperture increases shear displacement. Upon brine injection, reduced 40% relative initial conditions ( μm) fluid-sorption induces a divergent displacement two sample halves (Δh ±50 − 170 quantified digital image correlation. None these changes are observed control experiment decane, indicating that creep subordinate swelling sealing fracture. Swelling-induced permeability within heterogeneous largely affect flow field, as computed using numerical simulations.

Coupling Geomechanics and Transport in Naturally Fractured Reservoirs
Large amounts of hydrocarbon reserves are trapped in naturally fractured reservoirs which arechallenging in terms of accurate recovery prediction because of their joint fabric complexity andlithological heterogeneity. Canada, for example, has over 400 billion barrels of crude oil in fracturedcarbonates in Alberta, most of this being bitumen of viscosity greater than 106 cP in the GrosmontFormat...
متن کاملChemomechanical Coupling of Molecular Motors
Living cells contain a large number of molecular motors: membrane pumps, stepping motors, growing filaments, and molecular assemblers such as polymerases and ribosomes. In many cases, these nanomachines are driven by the energy released from fuel molecules such as adenosine triphosphate (ATP). The coupling of the motor to these nonequilibrium reactions provides energy which is converted into co...
متن کاملPredominance and Metabolic Potential of Halanaerobium spp. in Produced Water from Hydraulically Fractured Marcellus Shale Wells.
Microbial activity in the produced water from hydraulically fractured oil and gas wells may potentially interfere with hydrocarbon production and cause damage to the well and surface infrastructure via corrosion, sulfide release, and fouling. In this study, we surveyed the microbial abundance and community structure of produced water sampled from 42 Marcellus Shale wells in southwestern Pennsyl...
متن کاملSPE 139250 Analysis of Mechanisms of Flow in Fractured Tight-Gas and Shale-Gas Reservoirs
In this paper we analyze by means of numerical simulation the mechanisms and processes of flow in two types of fractured tight gas reservoirs: shale and tight-sand systems. The numerical model includes Darcy’s law as the basic equation of multiphase flow and accurately describes the thermophysical properties of the reservoir fluids, but also incorporates other options that cover the spectrum of...
